TitleLiberation

Looking at queer organizers throughout history, whether Bayard Rustin’s behind-the-scenes work to organize the March on Washington in 1963 or queer women daring to tweet the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter in 2013, we are constantly reminded of the complexities of Black and Brown liberation and that freedom is a praxis of the community. This exhibition aims to highlight the amazing organizers and organizations in the city of Providence who tirelessly fight for the rights and needs of our queer communities of color.

While Pride month is a celebration of love, we wanted to take this opportunity to give folks in the queer community their flowers. The exhibition Liberation seeks to spotlight different organizers and organizations in the city of Providence that serve queer communities of color. Pulling major themes within queer organizing in the city, this exhibition will use works from local artists to speak to those themes, while bringing attention to various organizations.
