RISD: “Gendered Structural Racism and the Health of Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon” – Professor Sawsan Abdulrahim

January 10 @ 6:00 pm

Free

Timely and critical! Professor Abdulrahim’s work centers human rights principles to illuminate and act upon social inequities in health with a focus on refugee populations and labor migrants in the Arab region and beyond.

STAR!

Drawing on gendered structural racism and related frameworks, the talk will engage with the question of why the association between education and health, which is supposed to be linear and positive, is diminished among Palestinian refugee men in Lebanon. Sawsan Abdulrahim (PhD, MPH) is Professor of Public Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard FXB Center for Health and Human Rights. In her research, she utilizes mixed methods to illuminate social inequities in health across the life course, with a focus on the wellbeing of refugees and labor migrants in the Arab region. Most recently, she served as PI of community-engaged studies on the wellbeing of Syrian refugee adolescent girls and migrant women care workers in Lebanon. Her research interests include (forced) migration and health; aging and care; and the impact of structural violence on the health of refugees. She teaches courses on research methods, health promotion theory, social epidemiology, and forced migration.
